Meet Czech music experts who nominated six Czech promising bands beyond the ordinary popwith the potential to break abroad.

Karel Veselý 

Born in 1976, Karel is a renowned independent music journalist. He graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of Masaryk University and since 2008 has mostly been working as a freelance journalist. He contributes to Aktuálně.cz, Nový Prostor and A2 and closely collaborates with the team of music editors at CR Radio Wave. In 2010, he published his book Hudba ohně (The Music of Fire) and a year later he participated in the editing of the famous publication, Kmeny (Tribes). Well-versed in facts related to Japan and the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun, he is a co-author of the anthology Made in Japan (2014). 

Pavel Turek 

Born in 1979, Pavel completed his doctorate in the theory of photography and multimedia, but now mostly works as a music journalist. He spent what he considers a formative period of his life co-managing the magazine Živel. Previously, he also contributed to Rock & Pop, Reflex, MF Dnes and is a collaborator with Radio Wave. He co-founded the pictorial magazine, Komfort and between 2007 and 2009 he worked for the portal, Aktuálně.cz. He has been an editor at Respekt weekly since 1st April 2010. 

Jiří Špičák 

Born in 1986, Jiří is a regular contributor to Hospodářské noviny, His Voice and Cinepur. His music favourites include Joanna Newsom, Klaus Schulze, Steve Hauschildt, Sufjan Stevens, Olivier Messiaen, The Fiery Furnaces, James Ferrara, Paavoharju, Os Mutantes and the entire catalogue of the Ghost Box label. He works as a music editor on Radio Wave, where he also presents his own show – “Jiří Špičák’s Echo”. 

Helena Pazdiorová 

Born in 1991. She lives and studies in Olomouc. Graduated from Czech and Ukrainian philology, she continues studying and aims for the doctoral degree in the field of comparative slavic philology. Her main focus is literature but she is also one of the upcoming Czech music journalists. She used to write for Muzikus magazine, now she is a regular AlterEcho magazine contributor writing about progressive Czech scene. 

Bára Alex Kašparová 

Her main focus is music and photography. She studied classical singing, currently studying photography at Institute of Photography. She contributes to FOTO magazine and was brought back to music through creative photography. She is the editor in chief of monthly culture magazine Artikl since the beginning. She also curates regular music events, that Artikl organizes to support young local music scene. Currently started a site specific Gallery Evoluční focused on young art scene. She is interested in various social topics and still believes that truth and love will lies and hatred. 

Veronika Ruppert 

Editor and host at Radio Wave. One of the most popular Czech experts on fashion. Veronika Ruppert is a stylist, producer and host of the only radio fashion show Modeschau. She is a long term supporter of young Czech designers. Hosts various fashion talks and curates fashion events in collaboration with a non-profit organization Elpida. She is also a DJ performing under moniker Neoru and organizing regular parties Levitate, inviting mainly female artists and DJs from the local scene and abroad as well.
