Daniel Baláž (Slovakia)
Daniel Baláž was born in 1969 and after spending two years studying law at the Pedagogical Faculty of Charles University in Bratislava, he left school to focus fully on music – performing and recording with bands Nový chlieb, Ospalý pohyb, Vitebsk Broken and Vapori Del Cuore. He has been collaborating with musicians, such as Ivan Csudai and Martin Burlas, and the theatre ensemble, Stoka. Daniel contributes to INzine, Virus, and .týždeň magazines. Since 1993, he worked as a presenter and editor of the Bratislava-based Ragtime radio; after the discontinuation of its service in 2000, he joined Rock FM which later evolved into the alternative Radio_FM where he has been an editor, presenter and music programmer to this day.
How should musicians whose ambition is to make it on the international scene strive to improve?
They should produce music that is original enough to avoid comments such as “nothing new on our scene – yawn”. They should be ready to dedicate their time, funds and to have a committed agent.
Are you educated in music, are your active on the music scene?
I play the drums and synthesisers in a band called Ospalý pohyb.
Have you ever won a competition? Are you the competitive type?
I like the regional TV quiz-type competitions such as the AZ Quiz which has a special calm Moravian vibe.
