Czech Radio will offer full coverage of both the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang and 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The broadcasting rights were acquired from Discovery Communications. This means that, same as in recent years, Czech Radio will be present right at centre stage of these sports events and provide the most up-to-date service to its listeners.
“Czech Radio does its best to retain major sports events in its programme. However, all depends on the cost, and the ever-increasing prices of broadcasting rights for such events might become completely unacceptable for Czech public service media one day. Despite that, we have good news for the fans of Czech Radio’s sports broadcasts. Due to agreement with Discovery Communications – the owner of all broadcasting rights for the whole of Europe, we will be able to convey to our listeners the inimitable atmosphere of not only the 2018 Winter Olympics, but also of the Summer Olympic Games taking place in Tokyo two years later”, said René Zavoral, Director General of Czech Radio.
Currently, Czech Radio is the only radio broadcaster in the Czech Republic with unlimited broadcasting rights for both the Summer and Winter Olympics of 2018 and 2020. It can thus offer fully-fledged coverage of both these events on all its stations, including the CRo Sport digital broadcasting station.
“Czech Radio traditionally devotes a lot of broadcasting time to the Olympics. To us, the acquisition of broadcasting rights means both great news and great commitment. We are already beginning our preparations so that we can offer our listeners the best experience from the very centre of the Olympic events. The Radiožurnál channel, in particular, will offer live broadcasts, broadcasts of major games and events, and interviews with Czech athletes and experts”, said Czech Radio News Director, Jan Pokorný.
