Vítězslava Kaprálová (1915 - 1940)

Vítězslava Kaprálová
Vítězslava Kaprálová

Vítězslava Kaprálová was born in Brno on 24 January 1915 as an only child of the composer Václav Kaprál. During 1930-1935, she studied composition with Vilém Petrželka and conducting with Zdeněk Chalabala at the Brno Conservatory. For the next two years she continued her musical education at the Prague Conservatory, participating in the masterclasses of Vítězslav Novák (composition) and Václav Talich (conducting).

Aided by a French government scholarship, she moved to Paris in 1937, where she studied composition privately with Bohuslav Martinů and conducting with Charles Munch at L'Ecole Normale de Musique. Following the German occupation of Czechoslovakia on 15 March 1939, Kaprálová decided to stay in exile in France. In April 1940 she married the writer Jiří Mucha. Only two months later her marriage and musical career were cut short by her tragic death in Montpellier, allegedly from miliary tuberculosis.
