Concerto for Flute and Chamber Orchestra - Marie Sommerová

10. prosinec 2009

Marie Sommerová (born 1980) comes from the town of Orlová in Silesia. In 2002 she completed her composition studies at the Prague Conservatory. In the following two years (2002 to 2004) she studied conducting at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory. During this period she attended conducting courses with Kurt Masur, and composition courses with Marek Kopelent. Since 2004 she has been studying composition at the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague under Prof. Václav Riedelbauch. In 2007 she co-founded the A Tempo Revue internet magazine, where she currently works in the editorial staff. Since the same year she has also been a member of the Konvergence Composers Association. Her compositions have been performed - among others - at the international festivals of the Prague Spring or the Prague Premieres.

The two movements of the Concerto for Flute and Chamber Orchestra represent two antipoles - whereas the intimate first part results from the linear mode of thought and leaves no space for any instruments (not even the solo instrument) to stand out, the second movement allows the individual instrument groups to emancipate themselves, making use of their specific timbre characteristics and the dynamics of the orchestration. Also the solo flute part becomes more technically demanding. This complexity, however, is far from being the typical exhibition of the soloist's skills at the expense of the thematic and ideological solidity of the piece. The work was premiered by the flautist Hana Brožová Knauerová, whose brilliant performance was supported by the Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra with Marko Ivanović.
