Czech Songs for Three Female Voices, or Female or Children's Choir, and String Quartet, Op. 17 - František Domažlický

27. červen 2018

The songs of Domažlický’s cycle come from western, central, eastern and southern Bohemia.

Domažlický literally takes over both the lyrics and the melody in the original tonality. Except for the song "You look beautiful to me" in G minor, he chose songs in major tonality. The accompaniment of other vocal voices is mostly homorhytmical in relation to the main melody; sometimes the imitation technique is used. The quartet accompaniment respects the basic harmonic structure of the songs and ads counterpoint counter voices to the final sound. The lyrics are mostly love lyrics. It is interesting that although he devoted the compositions to female voices, he chose also lyrics where a man is the main speaker ("Oh, mountain, how tall you are") or it is a dialogue between a woman and a man ("You look beautiful to me", "What’s wrong with you?" and "You are not what you pretend to be").

The recording of Czech songs was published on CD in 1993 by Channel Classics together with the recording of opera Brundibár by Hans Krása. The interpreters were the Disman Ensemble (DRDS) with the choirmaster Joža Karas and a string quartet with Jan Mráček and Zdeněk Jiroušek playing the violins, Oldřich Smola playing the viola and Peter Mišejka playing the cello.
