Dalibor C. Vačkář (1906 - 1984) wrote five symphonies, numerous concertos for a wide array of instruments including violin, piano, harpsichord, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, bassoon, oboe and percussions. His compositions include a triple concerto for soprano saxophone, accordion and guitar and several pieces of chamber and choir music. To appreciate the scope of his musical interests one has to include many songs and chansons where he also wrote the lyrics, marches, waltzes, and in the Thirties, a number of so called "tramp" songs as well. His film scores became classics in their own right and greatly enhanced the popularity of the respective motion pictures. The music score for the film "The Conceited Princess" was an extraordinary effort. It almost elevated the story to the quality of a musical where the motifs of Princess Krasomila, King Miroslav, the nanny, the deputation, and attendants rounded and interconnected the story.
In cooperation with the poet laureate Frantisek Hrubin the most popular song, "Rozvijej se poupatko" (Unfold Ye Rosebud), was created. This melody is a leitmotif of the whole story and is clearly identifiable through out. Soon after the premiere in 1952 D. C. Vackar wrote an independent composition "Unfold Ye Rosebud" in two versions: first has the motif sung by the Nanny, second as a simple intermezzo without the text. In 1954 the author created a fourteen-minute composition "The Music for Conceited Princess for Orchestra", which not only recapitulates in purely musical terms the story of the film, but also unveils a number of lovely motifs hidden under the dialogues. It enchants by its melodic and instrumental freshness and lays the foundation for a series of film fairy tales created shortly after the War, characterized by a unifying musical motif and song.
