“String quartet No. 1 was composed in 2014 and it is inspired by various emotions. On the one hand, these are emotional experiences from my personal life, on the other hand, it is the war in Ukraine.
When I composed the quartet, protests at Maidan took place and Crimea was occupied. Right after the quartet was finished, the war at the eastern borders broke out. The anger, shock and fear from these events left a deep imprint in my quartet. Obviously, this was not my original intention. It is rather a consequence that I could not avoid at that time.” Jan Rösner
