BOOT_audiovisual: State of Weightlessness

3. duben 2014

Natural sounds, mechanical sounds, and digital sounds mix to create a complex rhythmic space. Like orientation within the visible world, our orientation within acoustic space is determined by the tension between known and unknown phenomena, the cardinal directions, intensity, or magnetic fields and energy fields. The sound of living organisms deepens our awareness of the transient nature of the present, while the sound of machines looks to the future.

Sounds that are created as amplified binary sequences from within the bowels of a computer distribute a fiction. They create within the listener an illusionary space and give shape to the dream of an emotional world that in reality does not exist but is merely experienced. Data sounds are a paradoxical picture of an invisible data network that we need to survive in the real world.

The three-part composition State of Weightlessness is an audio expression of the dynamic relationships between the physical and virtual worlds and the ways in which they overlap.

The audio format of the first part is based on interactions between a virtual audio object and three-dimensional space. Simulated physical parameters such as dimensions, gravitational force, and the walls’ reflectivity influence the audio object’s movement in order to independently generate a spatial composition. The recording using sounds from the natural environment recorded while walking through nature. The steps measure out a regular rhythm that alternates with a state of rest, interrupted by electronic sound.

The middle part of the composition is characterized by a continuous flow of successive layers of electronic samples, mixed in real time. The digital audio space increases in intensity and culminates in the composition’s third part, where it forms a figurative digital trap that ensnares the final natural echo. The recording of birdsong is modulated by the simulated motion of the virtual audio object within the three-dimensional space.
