Katharina Schmitt: In Furs

30. leden 2015

I imagine the following: The duration of the contract, half a year. You my mistress, me your slave. What does ‘slave’ mean here? ‘Slave’ means that you decide. When I get up, when I sleep, whether I sleep. What I eat, what I see, to whom I speak, what I wear. You have what is needed to decide for me. You couldn’t make a wrong decision. Get used to that thought.

This adaption of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s novel was initially written by Katharina Schmitt for the theatre in Leipzig in 2010. Severin von Kusiemski, the masochistic protagonist of the story, wants to make a contract with Wanda von Dunajew. He wishes to become her slave and object of phantasies, which he himself makes up and directs. In Furs is a text about the relationship of language and power, directed by the writer herself and presenting the electronic soundscapes of Patrik Charvát.
