Matouš Hejl: Exponential Pleasures
This new composition by the young Czech composer and sound artist, Matouš Hejl, was inspired by the distinct aesthetics of Nordic “drones” and by the intrinsic algorithmic approaches to composition as such.

The sound mass of the introductory part is based on the repetitive sound of the historical Sergeanalogue synthesizer and on recordings of an air show – the abstract space of the synthesized sounds is confronted with a lo-fi recording of the real space. The middle section features beats and processed sounds of wooden instruments. The final part consists in the simple principle of two geometric progressions, descending and ascending, being mingled.
It could be said that it is a system whose parts act simply but their combination results in complexity. The sound is mostly created algorithmically while the sine tones with reverb might resemble the early electronic music of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk studios in Cologne in the 1950s.
A certain metaphoric form of the whole composition is the tangent to the exponential function.
