Mex and more
A mostly Latin-flavoured set, with a special focus on Mexican remix king Toy Selecta. Two hours of cumbia, nortec, hip hop and uptempo electro from Latin America and elsewhere.
Some of the most exciting remixes of the past couple of years have come from Mexico's Toy Selectah, otherwise known as Antonio Hernández, and formerly known as Toy Kenobi of Mexican hip hop stars Control Machete. In this week's Friday Ripple we put a bunch of them in one place. A diverse set of artists get the Toy Selectah treatment here: from current US alternative darlings Vampire Weekend and Santigold to French electro stars Justice and Air; from nortec outfit Bostich & Fussible to... Morrissey? The Outfield? Yes indeed, and it works, too. If you want to hear more Toy Selectah, get the Mex More LP, which is free to download from the website of Toy Selectah's record label Mad Decent.
JUKEBOX: Friday Ripple 12.2.2010

For many years, the genre of cumbia was seen as cheesy South American pop music; but thanks to artists like Toy Selectah, Sonora, and (regular Friday Ripple favourite) Mexican Institute of Sound, cumbia has been reborn as a slamming 21st century electro sound. Find out why on this week's show.
Elsewhere in the mix, we've got some uptempo dance remixes of the aptly-named Ska Cubano, as well as funky beats from Brazil, Spain and Greece. Towards the end of the show we get into a typical Friday Ripple global wander, mixing up Balkanbeat, Afrobeat, Zimbabwean and Lebanese hip hop, and other good stuff. It's a long playlist this week, because most of the songs are short! 30 tracks, streaming right now on the Radio Wave Jukebox under Friday Ripple > 12.2.2010, and it looks like this:
