Východiska: Outsiderská estetika No Basement is Deep Enough

16. červenec 2014

Label No Basement is Deep Enough vydáva “sémantických väzňov”, vyvrheľov “kultúrnej hegemónie”.

“Naším hlavným cieľom je dávať príležitosť miestnym kapelám hrať a spájať ich so zahraničnými projektmi.

Ide o koncerty.

The outsider aesthetics of No Basement is Deep Enough
The label No Basement is Deep Enough publishes “semantic prisoners”, outlaws of “cultural hegemony”. On one side, their activities are cloaked in a veil of postpostpostmodern irony and Frankfurt School philosophy, on the other, there is the noticeable seriousness and determination, which they channel into their tapes – hand-made artworks in the spirit of DIY.

“The main focus is on giving opportunity to local bands to play and connect them with foreign acts, which is always a great opportunity to share knowledge and interests and that´s pretty much how our label works, it´s based on that connection and sharing and solidarity,” says Milja Radovanović who runs the label together with Ignace de Bruyn. The imprint operates between Antwerp and Belgrade, which is mirrored in its music as well as aesthetics. They don't eschew object fetishism, on the contrary, all the releases are tapes wrapped in artifacts of their own, injected with a dash of playfulness. “To activate your basements and attics, that´s what we try to do, to motivate people to bring out the stuff that they are hiding or are ashamed of thinking that it´s not good enough or fitting the standard. We actually are praising this non-standard, which we often call weirdo, or outsider," she adds.

Musically, the label is hard to categorize, they release electronics, noise, offbeat singer songwriters and all sorts of eccentric experiments. “We definitely try to avoid any sort of labels, genres or categorisations, that is pretty obvious in the music that we release and the artwork, covers that we make. You cannot really define them so easily.”

Apart from releasing tapes, which probably chime more to the west of Belgrade, they also devote their time to local activities. Ignace de Bruyn is one of the most active promoters and advocates of Belgrade's sonic underground. “When the tapes don´t get to the people here, there are other ways to get the bands to the people in the form of Nema Tog Podruma, which is the Serbian translation of No Basement is Deep Enough. That is mainly in the form of shows. It´s again this organic thing, friends contacting me or friends of friends passing by and playing shows,” adds Ignace de Bruyn as we bid farewell at 6:40am at the already bustling Belgrade train station on that June morning.
