Come and enjoy Czech Christmas Mass

13. listopad 2015

During Advent – a time when more than ever we should yield to calm, relaxation and joy and to pleasant spiritual and artistic experiences – you can visit Studio 1 at Vinohradská 12 to enjoy a rendition of Jakub Jan Ryba’s Czech Christmas Mass.

Alongside the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra it will be performed by soprano Michaela Šrůmová, mezzo-soprano Markéta Cukrová, tenor Václav Čížek, bass Jaromír Nosek and vocal ensemble Cappella Mariana, led by choirmaster Vojtěch Semerád.

From 17:00 on Friday 4 December all of the above will be conducted by Vojtěch Spurný, who has prepared a new edition of Ryba’s mass that aims to be as faithful as possible to the original. He has turned to the oldest preserved transcription of the piece from the hand-written suite for voices in the collection of the Czech Museum of Music.

A recording of the concert, to which we cordially invite you, will later be broadcast by Czech Radio Vltava (on Sunday 20 December at 15:00). You will hear the fresh, joyous and elsewhere calmly meditative music of the Czech Christmas Mass – which one of the best educated teachers of his day, Jakub Jan Ryba, composed in 1796 – in the company of the listeners of radio stations in Germany, the UK, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria, Canada and Portugal. All of them will be linking up to the Euroradio Christmas Music Day.
