TATA / BOJS and PRSO to release live album of joint Forum Karlín concert

15. květen 2017

When last year TATA / BOJS announced a joint concert with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tomáš Brauner as part the New Horizons project, it’s likely neither side knew what they were letting themselves in for. There were concerns and nerves in both camps during the months of preparation, but also anticipation and curiosity.

However, the concert itself, which took place on 23.11.2016 at a sold out Forum Karlín, completely blew away any doubts, becoming an event that resonates to this day with all involved. We will be able to recall it yet again on 26 May when a live album of the concert will be released on CD, vinyl and digitally under the title TATA BOJS & SOČR Live.

“Though we had a few worries about the whole project initially, there was general enthusiasm in the end. It proved one thing – our songs are at their core quite symphonic. A key role was played by the understanding and sensitivity of Marek Doubrava, who looked after the arrangements. We did our best to make sure it was fun for us, for the listeners and hopefully also for the orchestra themselves. We wanted the recording to sound layered and for the distinctive electro sounds familiar from our records to be wittily replaced by the live instruments of an orchestra. We approached each song individually and with a certain concept of the result. For me personally it was interesting to concentrate on the vocals alone in the majority of songs. The other half of my brain, which is always taken up by drumming, could kick back this time…,” says Milan Cais of the whole project.

The PRSO conductor Tomáš Brauner adds: “TATA / BOJS have their own original style and I was interested in the combination of their music and a symphony orchestra. Suddenly the music acquired a whole other dimension. I really enjoyed it all and I trust the guys did, too. What’s more, thanks to this project I gained new friends and discovered a group that I didn’t know much before but who I’m now definitely a fan of!”

The 15 songs (the vinyl LP contains just 10 for reasons of sound quality. Ed. note), including well-known hits such as Toreadorská otázka, Pěšáci and Attention Aux Hommes!, as well as songs from TATA / BOJS’ most recent studio LP A/B, including Mardoša’s “vocal” debut in the form of the song Kamarádky, offer listeners a unique musical treat.

Well-known songs have acquired a brand new flavour thanks to the great sound of Dušan Neuwerth, the interesting material and entertaining arranger’s jokes courtesy of the composer and former TATA / BOJS member Marek Doubrava.

“Milan made the initial selection and then we narrowed it down together. Then I added Kamarádky, when I had a clear vision of a piece for ‘Mardoša and Symphony Orchestra’, where the orchestra comments on Mardoša’s lyrics,” says Doubrava of the project’s inception. “Though it involved a combination of two absolutely divergent worlds – of volume, expression, rehearsal style, performance style, etc.… the cooperation with the PRSO and conductor Tomáš Brauner was good. The fantastic atmosphere at Fórum Karlín during the concert attests to the fact that the combination of both worlds was a success. I’m glad that a symphony orchestra and rock band can also sound witty; most of the time it sounds affected,” he adds.

Finally we should add that the project was initiated by Petr Král from Radiožurnál, who was behind the previous successful project "Karel Kryl 70" and Jakub Čížek, director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. The album TATA BOJS & SOČR Live is being released by Supraphon in coproduction with Radioservis and in cooperation with Czech Radio.
