Josef Zedník, tenor
This native of Prague (1979) studied at the Jan Neruda Secondary School with focus on music, and at the Prague Conservatory with Jarina Smoláková-Svolinská and Antonín Švorc. He took part in the Rossini Opera Festival in the Italian city of Pesaro and continued at that time to gain further experience under the guidance of Daniela Barcellona, Raul Gimenéz, Bruno de Simone and Marco Spotti.
He is currently studying singing at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts under Magdaléna Hajóssyová. In 2009 he attended vocal master classes and ISA (International Summer Academy) Prague-Vienna-Budapest workshops headed by Gabriela Lechner, Leopold Spitzer and Bernarda Fink.
He has entered various singing competitions (Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary, Emmy Destinn Competition in London) and has worked with a string of distinguished soloists, ensembles and conductors, such as Gabriela Beňačková, Jiří Malát, Ivan Kusnjer, Martin Kasík and the Prague Philharmonic Choir (C. Orff: Catulli Carmina).
During the 2003/2004 season he joined the company of the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec where he performed the role of Monostatos in Mozart´s Magic Flute. The 2007/2008 season saw him appearing with the Hradec Králové Philharmonic where he sang in Mozart’s Requiem under conductor Michel Moureau. He sang the tenor part in Mozart’s Coronation Mass (České Budějovice Chamber Philharmonic, conductor Stanislav Vavřínek) at the Mahler Festival in Jihlava in 2009. The audience of Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra heard him in Czech Christmas Mass by Jakub Jan Ryba in December 2009.
Josef Zedník has been a guest artist at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň since 2009, performing the role of Monostatos in Mozart´s Magic Flute and the Jew in Richard Strauss’s Salome. In September 2009 he was a hit with audiences singing the tenor part in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde at the Dvořák Festival in Karlovy Vary.
In October 2010 he made his debut in Theatro Municial do Rio de Janeiro as Albert Gregor in Leoš Janáček´s opera The Makropulos Case with Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica.
