Besar is the youngest offspring of orang-utan female Zaneta and male Elmar. He was born on February 8, 2005. He is four and a half years old, meaning he is an orang-utan "teenager". He always experiments, teases, and pesters his mum and "aunt" Satu who also lives in the troop.
He is very brave. For instance, at the feeding time, he always tries to grab as much of the best delicacies as possible. He will snatch a dainty and dart to the most remote place in the enclosure. In the outer enclosure, he teases visitors and begs for food with a stretched hand.
When mother Zaneta approaches him, he retreats quickly and looks very apologetic. When he encounters something strange or unusual, he rushes to the safety of his mother's embrace (e.g. when he first saw a helicopter fly over the outer enclosure). He is entering adolescence and his tricks are becoming ever more frequent and braver. He never ceases to surprise and is sometimes cheeky but his mum has always managed to teach him manners.
He has impish face, very smart look and long, light red fur. He is relatively big with long arms and legs. Tirelessly climbing on stumps, platforms, nets and ropes in the enclosure, he is becoming quite strong, growing muscles especially on his front limbs. This is because orang-utans move around primarily by brachiating - swinging from one branch to the next in the upper levels of the forest. They descent to the ground only rarely. "Besar" means "big" in an aboriginal language. The little organ-utan was given this name because he was really big as a baby, weighing an estimated 2 kilograms. Newborn orang-utans usually weigh around 1.5 kg. Let's wish Besar continues to prosper and gets a sibling to play with. In the wild, orang-utans usually bear young in five-year periods.
