Female Satu was brought to Zoo Dvur Kralove on February 13, 2009. She was born on August 31, 1999 in the Twycross Zoo, UK. Under the EEP (European rescue programme), she was designated as a partner for male Elmar. Whe she arrived she weighed 54.5 kg. She was accompanied by her keeper Tanja who was supposed to make the first days in the new environment easier for her.
Satu is very pretty young orang-utang lady with a very fine long fur of a lighter shade than the other orang-utangs at our zoo. She is quite stubborn and spent the first few days hanging on the upper bunks and ropes. She brought a pink blanket with her which we put in the enclosure. She grabbed the blanket and artfully hung it on the upper bar to create something like a cocoon. Holding all four corners of the blanket, she spent several days in this nest. She left it only in the evenings to pick treats that were prepared for her, and then wrapped herself again in the blanket and refused to communicate with anyone including her English keeper for days. We played a trick on her, allowing male Elmar in her place. He proved himself to be a worthy partner for Satu and mated her, yet he failed to drive her into the neighbouring enclosure.
In the end, it was our resourceful keeper Nada who found a way - she hid by the sliding door and waited patiently. In the evening, when the pavilion was quiet, Satu dared pass to the other part of the enclosure to get some treats. At that moment, Nada slammed the door shut. That did the trick and Satu eventually started to communicate. She remains pretty hard-headed, though, and continues to refuse to walk through the tunnel passage. She retaliated and made us worried when we let her out to the outer enclosure together with Zaneta and Besar. She refused to move back in for a week, not even to grab some treats. Our nice talk failed, so did Zaneta's attempts. It was chilly and rainy and we waited every day till dusk for her to get reasonable or for the rain and cold to drive her home. This did not happen. She would descend from her elevated platform, pick some grass and put it on her head when it started to rain, and then climb up again. In the end we had to tranquilize her (using the opportunity to perform an overall medical check) and carried her inside the pavilion. That's to illustrate how stubborn Satu is...
