Elmar is a mighty orang-utang male with arms spanning 290 cm. He has long, dark red fur. A true orang-utan male, he prefers solitude, just like his peers in the wild.
He wants peace and quiet, regular daily routine and does not wish to be disturbed by anything and anyone. He is interested in food, drink, and females, but given his age (he is thirty-five-ish), he does not care about females as much as before. However, new young female Satu threw him off his balance and he was eager to mate her.
Elmar is nice, thoughtful and obedient. He is happy when his keepers attend to him and talk to him. He is also smart and when a female refuses to return inside from the outer enclosure, keepers tell Elmar: "Fetch Zaneta" or "Fetch Sata" and Elmar makes the respective female move in. He always wants to be rewarded - with a nice word and a treat. He loves bananas, grape wine, various rags, wood wool - he makes his nest, covers himself and is totally happy.
Elmar hates strange people (especially male). When servicemen come to do maintenance, he gets angry and roars using his throat pouch - the sound is loud and audible from a long distance. Likewise, he dislikes our veterinary, doctor Vahala. He has never hurt Elmar in any way but is 197 cm tall, which may be the cause of Elmar's animosity. Elmar can also demonstrate his resentment by producing watery faeces, which is also a manifestation of nervousness. The keepers aren't very happy when this happens because it means extra work for them.
That's what he is like and we like him the way he is.
He has fathered four offspring in our zoo with Zaneta, and a son with Dona.
