21:20 | ANTICANON OF WORDS
A comprovisation for 10 speakers and musicians as a gift for art.
ART'S BIRTHDAY 2019 /// ANTIKÁNON SLOV
Through speech and music, words become something else, creating new shapes and protagonists in a musical-textual structure. A bilingual radio bombardment of the text canon of the last hundred years. Words in rhythm, melody, harmony, palimpsest. A simple improvising structure taking off from the region “before” language and speech, through the construction of coherent entries, to their looping, repetition, and decomposition. Prepared by Ian Mikyska.
A free selection from Czech texts written in the last hundred years, inspired by Czech Radio Vltava’s poll Kánon100, forms the basis of the improvising material: poetry and prose, taken out of context, built up and broken apart, repeated, overlapping, translated. The translation of the Czech texts into English is an integral part of the piece – even for a Czech-speaking listener, the oscillation of words on the axis between sound and meaning is central for listening to it. This playing field is further extended for the non-Czech speaker listening, as words gain meaning through translation and then proceed to lose it in repetition.
This piece has been especially prepared and commissioned for Art’s Birthday 2019. The performers on voices include actresses (Vendula Holičková and Kateřina Císařová), improvisers (Annabelle Plum and Ivan Palacký) and composers (Petr Wajsar and Ian Mikyska), while the musicians hail mostly from the world of free improvisation. Most of the performers have never performed together (or met) before. This is truly a birthday present for art – the art of words, sounds, and noises.
