The dog didn’t bark that night – Empty House

20. září 2021

What is it like to live alongside the man everyone calls the boss of the Romani underworld? Was he a beloved husband, a mobster or a feared partner? A little bit of everything. Mrs Marie was the wife of Antonin Bela, who was shot dead in his home in 1996 by unknown men under circumstances that have not yet been clarified.

The three-part documentary was made based on the wish of 77-year-old Marie Belova: “I want to warn women with my testimony not to follow their love blindly as I did”. The author filmed the documentary over a period of six months, with many pauses when the main character was mentally indisposed.

What emerged was a unique account of life with a powerful man of the underworld, which at times only hints at, but for the most part reveals the tragedy of the life of a woman who entered an environment with its own laws. What's more - it gives a glimpse into the world of the justice and security forces of the state. However, even the author did not know that Marie wanted to end her life with this confession. Not long after the trilogy was broadcast, she committed suicide.
