Viktor Kalabis

composer (1923–2006)

Viktor Kalabis studied composition at Prague conservatory under Emil Hlobil (1945–1948) and at the Academy of Performing Arts (AMU) under Jaroslav Řídký (1948–1952). Simultaneously, he studied musicology and psychology at Charles University.

He worked as a music director and editor of Czechoslovak Radio in Prague. Since 1972 he composed his own music. He is a co-founder of Concertino Praga international radio competition. In 1990–2003 he was president of Bohuslav Martinů Foundation and he initiated Bohuslav Martinů Institute.

He belongs to significant composers of the second half of the 20th century. He composed more than 90 opuses. Many of his compositions were commissioned by interprets or international compositions and festivals.
